I've suffered from many mental illnesses since birth and I’m also slightly autistic. For years, I've been telling people that treating the brain as a black box is folly. In an experiment, one could ask Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison to study people with serious mental illnesses and developmental disabilities indirectly, only through observation, as practitioners do today. They would quickly conclude (I believe) that it is impossible to make progress using this Luddite method. It can't work.
Psychiatry must grow up and evolve under the authority of neurology and real medicine. This quasi-medical field, which is literally dying out, needs to evolve and merge into real medicine.
I believe that the reclassification of serious mental illnesses is the tipping point, the gateway to real progress, and the end of separate but equal medicine that currently exists. We have strict standards regulating other fields to the scientific method and nonscientific standards for mental illnesses.
This chapter of unnecessary stagnation in medical progress needs to be put to bed. For over thirty years, I've waited to see something happen like the five-point grassroots plan, specifically, the first point.
A FIVE-PART GRASSROOTS PLAN TO ADDRESS SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS
1) Reclassify serious mental illness (SMI) from a behavioral condition to what it is, a neurological medical condition.
2) Reform the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
3) Repeal Medicaid’s Institutes for Mental Disease Exclusion (IMD).
4) Provide a full continuum of care.
5) Decriminalize serious mental illness.
I want to be part of the team and devote most of my energy to helping this reclassification take place for all serious mental illnesses. Often, during a crisis, is when new disruptive technologies that normally wouldn't be politically feasible — due to many interest groups resisting change — are implemented, Regulations are suspended and the process of innovation takes over.
So, this is an exciting time. Change is being forced on us, now, because our survival and maintaining our standard of living is threatened. We've been here before and, through science and technology, this country has won out.
Note: The FIVE-PART GRASSROOTS PLAN TO ADDRESS SERIOUS MENTAL ILLNESS was developed by mental illness advocates, journalists, family members, individuals, and professionals from throughout the United States. It’s been forwarded to many local, state, and federal leaders — particularly to 2020 presidential candidates. If you’d like a copy of the complete plan, send an email to dede@soonerthantomorrow.com.
